    ABOUT PORTALEGRE
    The district of Portalegre, belongs in its larger part, to the traditional province of the High Alentejo, complementing itself with some municipalities belonging to Ribatejo and bordering with Spain. In the same district, there is is the Serra de São Mamede, having at next, the Serra da Penha, declared natural park.

    The richness of its flora and fauna, which earns him the title of Natural Park, makes Portalegre a place for the realization of hiking in the nature, in which, it can be observed animals such as eagles, deer and wild boar, that lives between forests, chestnut and oaks..

    At patrimonial level, it highlights the See Cathedral, the Municipal Museum and the House-Museum José Régio, being in the same district, some of the most beautiful villages in the country, as Marvão, (located in the escarpment of the Serra de São Mamede), Castelo de Vide Crato, Elvas and Alter do Chão.

    The city of Portalegre, is the capital of the district, which covers an area of 6065 km ², and the resident population in 2008, was 116 744 inhabitants.
